| Fosamax May Cause Osteonecrosis
In a study conducted by the U.S Food and Drug
Administration, users of Fozamax experienced a higher incidence of osteonecrosis, or ONJ, compared to users of other bisphosphonates.
Marketed by
pharmaceutical
giant Merck & Co., under the names of Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva, the commonly-prescribed cancer and osteprorsis drugs, known as bisphosphonates, are among the most commonly prescribed drugs, with over 22 million prescriptions dispensed last year alone.
Osteonecrosis, known as ONJ or death of the jaw bone,
typically occurred
after minor dental work, and those suffering from ONJ may experience severe infections, tooth loss, numbness and swelling of the gums.
Treatment for osteonecrosis may require long-term antibiotic use and potential surgical intervention to reduce or repair the damaged areas of the jaw bone. Unfortunately, ONJ is resistant to common treatments, and surgery can often worsen the condition.
Unfortunately, Fosamax® remains in the body for months or years after its use has been discontinued, so even patients who are no longer using Fosamax® may have a risk for ONJ.
To compound the problem, evidence suggests that Merck did not provide timely updates to the warnings on the labels of Fosamax.
