| PPA / Phenlpropanolamine
PPA (Phenylpropanolamine) is an ingredient used in dozens of prescription
and over the counter cold medications as a nasal decongestant to
relieve stuffy nose or sinus congestion and in over the counter
weight loss products to control appetite.
People who are taking products containing PPA are at an increased
risk of hemorrhagic strokes (bleeding of the brain which often results
in death or disablement). It has recently been linked to causing
up to 500 hemorrhagic strokes each year. Although the risk of hemorrhagic
stroke is very low, the FDA has significant concern because of the
seriousness of a stroke and the inability to predict who is at risk.
The FDA has issued a public health advisory and is taking steps
to remove PPA from all drug products. They have also requested that
all drug companies discontinue the marketing of products containing
PPA.
- Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine
- Tavist-D Cold Allergy and Sinus Tablets
- Dimetapp Cold Medicine
- Triaminic DM Cough Syrup
- Dexatrim Weight Control Products
- Acutrim Weight Control Products
- Robitussin CF Cough Syrup
- Contac 12-Hour Cold Capsules
- Permathene Weight Control Tablets
Products containing PPA may be identified by looking for "phenylpropanolamine"
in the list of active ingredients on the label. If you are still
unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist. While the risk of
stroke is small, you may want to stop taking the drug immediately
and contact your doctor or pharmacist for alternative products that
do not contain PPA.
If you have experienced any of the symptoms listed below, you should
consult your doctor immediately.
- Severe headache
- Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
- Difficulty walking
- Change in vision
- Stiff neck
- Trouble with speech or understanding speech
- Sudden mental confusion or speech impairment
- Difficulty with movement
- Numbness in the face, limbs or body (especially one side)
- Tingling sensations
Time Limits on Filing Suit
Every case has a statute of limitations that will apply.
It varies by the type of case and the state where the case is filed.
Don't wait until there is trouble or until the end of your case
to get a lawyer. Your attorney would prefer to be involved every
step of the way, to monitor your case, to guide you, to prevent
trouble, and to assist you.
